In China, I participated in a State Department funded language exchange program, during which I lived with a Chinese host family and took written and spoken language classes with other American students. In the UK, I was part of a training program with the BBC Academy in factual and live television. I also completed a work placement with the BBC Radio 1's visual team, during which I edited video content, filmed and conducted interviews with artists, and helped with video promotions and social media.

Experience

My name is Liv, I'm a rising senior at NYU studying film. I was born in DC, but I grew up between France, Jamaica, the UK, China (briefly), and Germany, where my father lives and where I graduated from high school, and I'm of the firm belief that the best learning comes from going out into the world and doing. I do not, however, want to diminish the importance of teaching. Teaching is one of the oldest professions in history, and teachers are more than just passers-on of knowledge–they're mentors, inspirations, storytellers, friends, and family. In high school, I made a few extra pennies teaching German elementary school kids English, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I believe the teaching experience involves a combination of compassion and open-mindedness; it should never be a one way street. One of the best parts about tutoring in my experience is the exchange of ideas: I would learn just as much from my students as they would from me. My international experience has also made me receptive to different types of people. I recognize that everyone's brain works differently, and I'm very willing to accommodate that and figure out the most effective way for an individual to learn. In high school, I began tutoring American and British students in spoken and written German language. My students preferred me to older tutors because I could often relate to their situation and used examples that were culturally and socially relevant. Come junior year, I began to tutor German students in various AP, ACT, and SAT subjects in order for them to apply to American colleges, and this continued into my college years. I've taught a very diverse collection of students and thus have gained a wide array of subject knowledge. Relevant classes and training I've completed include: -NYU Film & TV major with experience in pre-production, cameras & lighting, production, analysis, and story composition & breakdown -Living in Germany and graduating from a German school (Abitur; 2,0 average) -A concentration in creative writing at NYU Tisch & nonfiction writing courses at Stanford University -16 years of piano lessons and classical composition training -5+ years teaching piano to young children, teenagers, and college students -Training with the BBC academy as well as a work placement with the BBC in London creating and editing video -Film and digital photography courses at NYU Tisch and Stanford University -AP US History & AP US Government courses and test prep, as well as 2 years experience teaching US History and Government to German students

Hobbies

Most of my friends will tell you that my most defining characteristic is my open-mindedness and affinity toward new experiences and people. That being said, I can also be a bit of an introvert from time to time--I enjoy writing, reading up on current events, and of course, watching as much Netflix as I can. I'm a huge Anglophile, so I particularly enjoy British TV, the BBC, and Ricky Gervais (though I will admit, the British "Office" leaves a lot to be desired.) I'm sort of a soccer fanatic, although I'm not particularly gifted in playing the beautiful game myself. I did play volleyball throughout most of my middle and high school career, but that went way downhill once I decided I was going to film school. I do, however, still enjoy playing casually from time to time. I'm extremely passionate about social justice and fight hard for equality across the board. I'm also passionate about travel, learning, and the music group Disclosure.
